Paint or no paint?

It's been awhile since I've had a decorating/design post, or anything remotely creative, because frankly, I haven't had the willpower. Now that school is over and things are settling down a little (I said a little) I would like to talk to you about a very important decision I've been mulling over for quite some time now:

To paint or not to paint?

Here's the deal: Since we've moved into this house, I've had the urge to paint the exterior brick. There are white spots all around that we'll not be able to remove, and I think a fresh coat of paint would really make the otherwise boring exterior of our house a little cheery-er:

It's quaint, but it just screams dull to me. However, I am scared to take this on. I'm not usually scared of paint OR color, and it's not like I'll be painting it bright orange or anything, but I'm scared it won't look the way I think it will. The hubs said I could do it if I wanted to, but I don't think he's 100% sold on the idea either. Here's where you come in. I've been daydreaming for awhile and looking up grand examples of beautifully painted brick to back up my rationale so I'd like you daydream with for a moment...

Okay, seriously? I'm sure it looked amazing without the paint, but I love this painted brick!

This is a little closer to what I mean. I was thinking about doing a light tan color, but this picture makes me wanna go even lighter.

I also love this one. This house, along with a house I pass on the way to work everyday just like this, makes me wanna paint it a darker gray.

Look at this AMAZING transformation from painting brick! Gorgeous! If only paint would make my house look like that!

Perhaps this would be an easier decision if I didn't have the siding and it was all brick. I wish I had a photoshop program that would let me play around with the colors on the photo and see what it would look like (if you know how to do that and want to humor me, that'd be awesome!)

So, I need your vote:

Choice 1: Don't paint the brick. Leave it alone.
Choice 2: Paint the brick a lighter tone, perhaps and creamy color.
Choice 3: Paint the brick a darker tone, like a gray or brown.

By the way, my door is now painted red I just don't have a picture of it. I'm excited to hear what you think!

Wow, that's a big decision and you're much braver than I would be. How about choice #4 - not sure? I would like to see a picture with the red door. Good luck with your decision.

Ha! The grass is always greener! I live in a brick house and we're trying to figure out how to get the paint OFF!

Too funny.

I say the following: work on plantings in the front, THEN worry about painting.

It is a brave decision to make. But I think it will help the over all look. I do think that it should be all one color to break up the way it is cut up. Best of luck.

oh my gosh go for it! If you don't like it you can pressure wash it away!
I am not sure which was I would go though being that you just painted your door red I would say go for a darker color on the brick.

I never thought about painted brick before...the pics you posted make it look amazing!!! I say go for it...what about painting the siding the same colour too to make it all flow?? Hmmm....I'm still undecided on light or dark tones...I think darker would go better with the red door though!
Good luck!!

And for the record...I would never have the guts to even think about doing it!! :)

Go for it! It's definitely a hard goal to take on. I've been telling myself I was going to paint my bathroom for a while now and that's a tiny job. Good luck and thanks for visiting my blog today. Have a great wknd!

That's a big decision. I can never picture things in my head and am the worst person to offer advice on such a big decorating project. You have to post pics if you decide to paint.

I just love it when they do it on HGTV. I tend to lean more towards the grey colors, which would look fab with your newly-painted red door. Just take your time in thinking it through!

I love the one with the taupe and black trim and door. Very classy!

Here it is September; what did you do? I looked up painting brick because I want to paint our pink-brick house. I saw it done on HGTV today (Curb Appeal, "Modern Makeover"), and it made a huge difference. The house is similar to yours; it has siding and brick. The paint ties it together and makes it look more modern. However, I've read that powerwashing the brick does not remove all the paint, so make sure you want to do it. Tracey

I am googling pictures of painted brick houses. I think I'm in the same situation -- 70s red brick (uughhh) with siding halfway up on the front, but brick along the back and siding on the garage. Currently it's dull red and brown brick, beige paint, and brown shutters. I'm leaning towards painting, we just need to get a cost estimate! And to make sure that it fits with the neighborhood, too.

Do Not Fear. I had the same concerns when painting my brick recently. What a transformation. Everyone loves it. I used Zinsser Bulls Eye primer (2 coats) Then Valspars Duramax paint, Semi-Gloss (2 coats). Homestead resort cream is the color, A beautifully light cream color and the home is freaking awesome.

I'm thinking about painting the brick on my house and it is similar in style to the first picture, the white house with the red brick. Have you painted it yet? if so, please post a picture, I would love to see it! Thanks

PAINT IT!!! It will feel modern and cleaner.
My sister painted their older, huge house in Tulsa a taupe. It looks great! Just coat it with a primer. I think
a red door looks great with any shade of tan.
